The seductiveness of the b
each is no secret. Humans have been flocking to where water meets land since ancient times. After all what made hundreds of thousands trek across wilderness and treacherous mountains for the ocean blue, well besides gold, that is? I would have to say it was to experience the serenity of aqua waiting on the other side. The ocean teeming in paradoxes, one of the last frontiers for discovery is a small piece of nirvana to which most of us are drawn at some time in our life.
I can remember my first time. Who doesn’t’ remember their first time seeing the ocean, especially if you waited a good part of your life to do so. My first time was in college. You know you are closer when the trees in the horizon start to disappear. Then comes that smell. It’s so different. A salty freshness permeates the air. My first ocean visit was to Daytona Beach, in Florida. Did I mention there was also romance in the air? Well, that goes along with both the ocean and college doesn’t it? It wasn’t “From Here to Eternity,†with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr. It was just myself walking with a boy along the beach. I can’t even remember the boy’s name. The romance came and went as swiftly as the tide. It was just one of those pristine, innocent ocean moments to savor.
There is definitely something magical about the beach. What is this allure of the ocean that causes half of the world’s population to live within fifty miles of its shores while inviting the other fifty per cent to vacation there? For many others and myself the spray of the ocean waves offers a renewal of life. The stresses of the world begin to fade away. Being near the ocean can change one’s “to do†list drastically. On the top of my to do list is to watch the sunset and squish my toes in the sand. Then there is to recreate the ocean/kiss scene in “From Here to Eternity,†with my husband. I know that will come. There is also to just let go and relax and let the ocean waves lull me into a deep meditative state. This was our objective with our latest ocean visit. This idea I found was hardly novel, as my husband and I, sat cross-legged on the beach, fingers in mudra position, less than a month ago, our last morning there. As I looked out there was quite a string of people doing likewise.
Ever since that first time of experiencing the ocean I’ve needed a “fix†so to speak as often as possible. I’ve experienced different beaches at different times in my life now, from different areas along the Pacific, the Gulf Shores, the Atlantic and even The Netherlands. While each individual beach offers a different flavor like ice cream they all still provide me with that Zen essence of ice cream. The water rolls up on shore for a brief moment of time and recedes back into the oneness representing the fluidity of life.
Whatever beach you choose prepare to lose your stress, let your children play in the sand, and let your own inner child come out. Before you go, rent “From Here to Eternity,†to watch with your significant other. This is a note to myself.

Thanks for the great post!
They look like great places to visit!!
A lot of shore towns now have other attractions, such as aquariums, Museums, shops, and other fun stuff. Also ask the locals about off the beaten path places that not too many tourists go. Also do as much research on the town and surrounding areas before you go and print out some activities that are within driving distance. Almost all towns now have websites that give some great information. There are some Gems in this country that go undiscovered everyday!
Another thing to do is call ahead or search online for events that are happening during the time you are visiting. Many places have festivals and fairs that are great! Some are even all about local culture, like blueberry festivals or culture fairs.
When you first arrive pick up some local newspapers, check them out for events, or local fleamarkets and garage sales (You never know what treasures you will find!)
Try an have some indoor activities planned and researched as well. That way if it rains you are prepared.
By far my favorite thing is to plan either 1/2 a day or a day to spend in the hotel! Bring some games, get take out from a local restaurant that you can't get close to home, and just relax, read, and spend time with the family!!
Hmmm...the day's not over..:-)
I'm not from US but we do have lots of beautiful beaches here, some have white sands. Boracay is one of the most famous beach resort here with white sand and clear blue waters, but its far from where i am right now.
this year, while searching for a new beach resort to go to, i found one, about 6 hours a drive away from where we are called "potipot island", fees and lodging are affordable there compared to well known beaches here in the north, and the place looks really much better, im getting excited to visit it, hopefully this april. of course i'd be bringing my aloe vera spray, it works really good on your skin especially with my kids who loves swimming also and always staying in the water.
Bye for now ~ it's time for me to dream myself on a beach. ; - )
Astoria is awesome, not only because it was featured in Kindergarten Cop and the Goonies.
Newport has the Oregon Coast Aquarium, as well as many other attractions. There are sea lions on the piers there that are fun to watch and loud.
Seaside has a little-known aquarium that is amazing. Although it is small, it is more intimate and hands-on, with animals and history. There is also the opportunity to feed sea lions up close and get great pictures.
As a side note, I own a large dog who sheds like crazy so I have learned to brush him on the beach or near the car before leaving. Not only does the wind help blow the hair away, brushing him pulls the sand off, keeping him clean and helping to dry him. Baby powder or baking soda dusted on his fur before brushing him also helps to dry him.
Yup! I agree with you that the ocean is definitely a magically place. Have you seen the black sand beaches of Hawaii? If you would like to know more about Hawaii beaches or anything about Hawaii, please feel free to let me know. I would be happy to share that information with you since I live on the Hawaiian Island. ;)
We love the beach and the ocean!
If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend oco Beach. It is just an hour from Orlando. It is also close to Cape Canaveral. Coco Beach it's self is just a fun place to be.
Packing a lunch is a sure fire way of saving money and having fun while on a vacation. There's nothing like a picnic on the beach.
It put me in mind of the few times that I have been to Ocean Shores here in Washington State. When we were youngsters our mom would rent a small cabin about six blocks from the beach. During our 3 or 4 days visit, we would walk to the beach every day, and play until we were worn out.
As an adult I have visited many beaches. From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and locations in between. I am NOT a beach bather nor an outdoors person but, the sand and surf draw me.
I've had the pleasure of staying in that grand old place as well. It is so quaint and lovely. I did not want to leave.
As an adult, I've been to California, Maui, Brazil, Cuba, Dominican Republic.....I'm still not sure I found the perfect beach. I'd love to go to Cypres, Greece, and Egypt.
I'm sure no matter where I go there'll be a beach to discover.
We tell the kids the rules before the vacation. We sit down and tell them exactly what is expected and what they are allowed to do. We also tell them what they are not allowed to do. We then tell them how they will be punished if they do not follow the rules. We only remind them of each rule one time before they loose priviledges. It is very effective and make sor a much more relaxing vacation. Arguing with kids is a sure way to take away the "relaxing" atmosphere.
