SUSAN B: MACKINAC ISLAND, MICHIGAN
Â
Hello 'PHOTO PARADE' members and anyone else who might happen upon this article.
I'm proud to present my PHOTO PARADE- Susan B: Mackinac Island, Michigan! These are photos from a trip I made with The Househusband and Sensational Son in 1998. We went to Michigan ostensibly to visit family that we seldom get to see, but we were barely through the door when they were pushing us back out to explore northern Michigan, Mackinac Island and the Upper Peninsula. We spent several days in Mackinaw City, making day trips to the various spots. Our visit to Mackinac Island was very fortuitous as it was right in the middle of their Lilac Festival and the enormous lilacs were all in bloom. Mackinac Island is across Lake Huron from Mackinaw City. They are spelled differently, but pronounced the same.
We toured the island via horse-drawn (very few motorized vehicles are allowed on the island) "tour bus," saw The Grand Hotel where the movie, "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was set and filmed, and enjoyed the fudge made on the island. Buying the fudge made us official "fudgies" or tourists to the island. It seems to be their only industry. While we were on the tour, the guide told us the funniest story that I've heard in a long time. In the winter, the lakes freeze quite a ways down and the Department of Transportation (or the Coast Guard or Forest Service?) plants tall orange poles in the ice for people on the mainland to follow in order to get to the island via snowmobile. One of the women on a previous tour had asked the guide why they didn't just leave the poles up all year.
