This is a photo essay of the Dragon Tail Run.  While this trip was on motorcycles, it's a lovely trip by car too.  I've included an excerp from the lodge's main page.

Located at the heart of all the action, the Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort is located at the south end of the famous Dragon, home to 318 turns in 11 miles of scenic and twisty US 129. With no distractions, the Dragon winds its way up and over the mountains of Tennessee into North Carolina and is the gateway for all NC has to offer. Like the land that time forgot, you will not find any driveways, gas stations, subdivisions or mini malls. In place of all the hustle and bustle of big city life, you will find many scenic and beautiful places to stop and take time to soak in all the natural beauty. Many people have come for a visit here and moved here not long after!

 

Tree of Shame

A group looking at all the memorabilia on the Tree - Click to enlarge imageEveryone should take a minute to see the "Tree of Shame." Started some time in the 80's by a group of Harley riders, it is a makeshift shrine to those bitten by the Dragon. After riders have successfully slayed the Dragon, they can smile at the parts left behind by other riders who were not so fortunate.

Many put their name, date, and a little saying on a part before they add it to the tree to immortalize their dance with the Dragon.

Great photos - those waterfalls are gorgeous! They're going on my list of falls to see ... and I'm glad I'm not too far away ... it's do-able!

This looks like a wonderful bit of road to travel. Those falls are amazing. I will have to try and find them next time we are down that way. Thanks for sharing your adventure.

We were treated to a cookout at the hotel near the bottom from some very generous bikers!

Sounds like a trip well worth taking. The hubby sold his motorcycle years ago since we had so many little ones there was not time to ride. Maybe one day (hopefully before I am 100) We could buy matching bikes and take a ride such as this. Loved the pictures, thanks for sharing.

This is a road trip you sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Hopefully there are pull offs to do this so you can take your time.
